Requirement to Substitute Teach
A substitute teacher is authorized to serve as a day-to-day substitute teacher in any classroom, including preschool, kindergarten, and grades 1-12 inclusive. A teaching credential or Emergency 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit is required. The substitute may serve for no more than 30 days for any one teacher during the school year, except in a special education classroom, where the holder may serve for no more than 20 days for any one teacher during the school year. Service does not have to be consecutive days, i.e., after 20 days in special education or 30 days in general education, return to the same class. With regard to long-term subbing, only a teacher holding the credential matching that particular assignment requirement may go beyond the 30/20 rule.
