Writing-So Much More Than "Word"

Marin County Office of Education-1111 Las Gallinas Avenue, San Rafael, CA 94901-Foundation Room

Start Time

3/21/2017 3:15 PM

End Time

3/21/2017 5:00 PM

In the past when we wanted to write something down, all of us were limited to more traditional tools; paper and pencil or a keyboard.  There were motor and skill challenges that we had to overcome in order to most effectively "write" down our thoughts.  This workshop supports the definition of "writing" to be transferring thoughts into a readable format.  Using this definition, students using modern day technology have more options to write than ever before including using their voice and word prediction that helps to overcome extreme spelling and productivity issues.  Virtually any tech platform offers many tools that assist the production and organization of writing and students are also learning to produce writing from a wide variety of tools that include phones, tablets and more traditional computer platforms.  This workshop will also explore all of the different types of writing that students are expected to produce; from narrative to expository text and from notetaking to brainstorming.  With our changing tools, we also need changing strategies; writing via more traditional methods are a bit different than using your voice or other technical supports and our strategies of how we teach and support writing must change to reflect this.  This workshop will teach you all of the options that is currently available as well as incorporate strategies that we can easily use to make sure EVERYONE can write!
